Utah Man

The Utah Fight Song, aka A Utah Man, got plenty of exposure on television last night and I'll admit I've been humming it a bit today. I am a Utah man, sir and I live across the green.

Our gang it is the jolliest that you have ever seen. Our coeds are the fairest and each one's a shining star. Our yell, you hear it ringing through the mountains near and far.

Chorus: Who am I, sir, a Utah man am I: A Utah man, sir, and will be till I die: Ki! Ki! We're up to snuff: we never bluff. We're game for any fuss. No other gang of college men dare meet us in the muss. So fill your lungs and sing it out shout it to the sky. We'll fight for dear old crimson for.....

Chorus:

And when we prom the avenue, all lined up in a row. And arm in arm and step in time as down the street we go. No matter if a freshman green, or in a senior's gown, The people all admit we are the warmest gang in town.

Chorus:

We may not live forever on this jolly good old sphere, But while we do we'll live a life of merriment and cheer. And when our college days are o'er and night is drawing nigh, With parting breath we'll sing that song:

A Utah Man am I!

Educators' Dedication is Impressive

The dedication of some Utah teachers continues to amaze me. Each month UEN sends out a couple of statewide e-mails to educators. Without fail some teachers open the message with surprising speed. That happened today. The message transmitted early this morning and by this afternoon more than 600 readers had opened it it -- even though this is New Year's Day. Many of those "early openers" expressed interest professional development courses.

Education Quote of the Day:
"Every morning when the alarm goes off, we have a totally new opportunity to do what we want with the hours we have been gifted. And we are gifted with that clean slate everyday for the rest of our lives."

Wild Bells Discovery

bells
Originally uploaded by rfin.

Ring Out Wild Bells by Alfred Tennyson includes eight stanzas, not just the three I've sung for years in the hymn with music by Crawford Gates. Here's the complete poem.

Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky, The flying cloud, the frosty light: The year is dying in the night; Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

Ring out the old, ring in the new, Ring, happy bells, across the snow: The year is going, let him go; Ring out the false, ring in the true.

Ring out the grief that saps the mind, For those that here we see no more; Ring out the feud of rich and poor, Ring in redress to all mankind.

Ring out a slowly dying cause, And ancient forms of party strife; Ring in the nobler modes of life, With sweeter manners, purer laws.

Ring out the want, the care, the sin, The faithless coldness of the times; Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymes, But ring the fuller minstrel in.

Ring out false pride in place and blood, The civic slander and the spite; Ring in the love of truth and right, Ring in the common love of good.

Ring out old shapes of foul disease; Ring out the narrowing lust of gold; Ring out the thousand wars of old, Ring in the thousand years of peace.

Ring in the valiant man and free, The larger heart, the kindlier hand; Ring out the darkness of the land, Ring in the Christ that is to be.
